I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE
John 11
When Life Does Not Make Sense…
I. Lord, the one you love is sick.
a. Resurrection implies that we will go through death/destruction
i. Though outwardly we are wasting away (2 Corinthians 4:6)
ii. Why does God allow it to be so hard?
1. 11For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. 12So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. (2 Corinthians 4:11-12)- So that he will be glorified!
b. 5If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. (Romans 5)
i. Psalm 10:14- But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
ii. HE IS OUR HOPE
c. The Rain falls on the Good and the Wicked (Matthew 7:24-27)
i. Build you your house upon the rock
ii. Psalm 9:9- The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
II. Resurrection Power
a. We need to call out to Jesus in our times of distress, just like Mary and Martha- GO TO THE ROCK
b. We need to wait patiently for His answer.
i. In our waiting, we need to acknowledge what we believe- Do you believe this?- Joseph
ii. Live what we believe and Trust God that His will is best.
c. When the enemy has destroyed—God will resurrect something new.
i. Isaiah 61:3- A Crown of Beauty Instead of Ashes; The oil of gladness, instead of mourning; a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
ii. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. (1 Peter 5:10)
iii. He makes ALL things new (Revelation 21:1-5)
1. 2 Corinthians 5:17- 17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
iv. What is new?
1. New Identity
a. John 1:12- God’s Child
b. John 15:15- I am a friend to God
c. Colossians 2:9-10- I am complete in Christ
d. 1 Corinthians 3:16- I am God’s temple
2. New Hope
a. Hebrews 3:6- But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.
b. Titus 2:13- while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,
3. New Strength
a. Philippians 4:13- I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength
III. Take off the grave clothes and let him go.
a. The grave clothes are always calling and trying to bring you down.
i. Be Hot or Cold- Revelation 3:16- So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
b. John 16:33- "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
c. SHED THE GRAVE CLOTHES
